MNBA Tournament Champions!
Submitted By Bob Caron on Monday, July 15, 2013
Our boys had another PHENOMENAL weekend of baseball in Mississauga.  They battled through the hot conditions to bring home the first Minor Rookieball MNBA title for the Oakridge/London West organization.

The boys had to play hard every game, as the schedulers decided to give our team a true litmus test.  All but one game were against AAA centres, and our boys hung tough.

Game #1 had us matched against a tough Markham squad, who matched our defensive strength for 5 innings, until we put up 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to secure the 12-5 victory.

Game #2 was penciled on Coach Korey's calendar for quite some time as one to watch.  We took on the host MNBA Tigers in another well played affair.  It was a tight defensive battle, but again we scored late and shut the door defensively.  This was highlighted by two outstanding outfield catches in the final inning that, if not caught, could have shifted the entire momentum of the game. Final score: 12-5

Game #3 pitted us against Georgina, whom we'd encountered in the Cambridge tournament in May.  The boys persevered through some rambunctious opposition fan support and walked away with a 21-7 victory.

Game #4 was a quarter-final match vs a tough Oakville team.  It was our third game of the day Saturday, and the coaching staff stressed that mental focus would win this game (not to mention a small bribe of 'pool time' if we won!).  The kids fought hard, and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th to take the lead.  Again the defense slammed the door in the final inning, and we walked away with the 8-6 victory.

Game #5 was a semi-final game vs the previously undefeated North York team.  Our boys came prepared to play this game hard, marching away with a relatively uneventful 17-5 mercy.  The highlights of this game were a two-out bases-loaded single by Rizz to keep the inning alive, followed by a bases loaded single and 'pickle' play by Lukas that allowed us to score every base runner.

Game #6 was the Championship Final vs another unbeaten team, the Mississauga Southwest Twins.  We knew it would be a tough battle.  Our boys started off a little shaky, giving up 4 runs in the top of the first inning.  We did manage to stymie the rally with an outstanding relay from centrefield to second to home plate, where Cooper blocked the plate to tag out a potential 5th run.  We then battled back with several runs of our own, and from there the game went back and forth.  Our Tincaps had several shut-down innings vs a good hitting Twins team, including a two-out rally in the top of the 7th with runners on second and third in a tie ball game.  Then in the bottom of the 7th inning, our first batter Isaac lead off with a hard infield single.  Our second hitter, Nate, hit a hot shot up the middle and Isaac tried to go first to third on the play. The Twins centrefielder fired a seed to third base, and Isaac was tagged out on a bang-bang play.  This play advanced Nate to second with the potential championship winning run and only one out.  Our Big Dawg and #4 hitter Roman came to the plate with the game on the line, and proved to be Mr Clutch.  He drove a hard liner to centrefield, and Coach Korey blew out his rotator cuff windmilling Nate to run home on the play.  The throw home was bobbled at the plate and Nate slid in with the championship-securing run!  Our boys poured from the dugout to celebrate, and there were a few tears of joy being shown (but our wives provided us some kleenex!).

The coaching staff could not be more proud of this team.  Every boy contributed to these wins, be it a clutch base hit, an outfield catch (we had several!), smart relays into the cut-off to keep the force on, and some key double-play rally killers.  The preparation done over the past month really paid off.  The boys should be very proud of this championship, as they defeated some powerhouse teams to achieve it.
