2017 Cambridge Classic, AAA Finalists
Submitted By Kent Weber on Monday, May 29, 2017
What an opening weekend for 12 boys born 2008 from London!  With only 8 practices and a few games under their red belts, taking on 12 of the best teams in the Province in their first-career AAA Tournament was ambitious to be sure. . .

But the TinCaps really showed their colors.  The Red and Green fought through several very tight games against experienced teams, to advance through pool play AND the Semis to reach the Final and place 2nd overall.

Game 1 was a great defensive battle vs. Leaside and a blue 3-legged pitcher throwing nastier than usual stuff.  We were down 2-0 most of the way, but with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th, leveled the game with a 2-run single, to end in a 2-2 tie.  Hero stuff.

Game 2:  Playing on the Tournament’s feature diamond, complete with grass infield, PA announcers and 80’s Walk-Up music, the boys rose to the occasion.  Against a tough North York team from Toronto, our lock-down defense was superb, and the bats were cracking, winning 12-2 in 5 innings.

Game 3 in pool play was against powerhouse Oakville, the 2016 OBA AAA Runner-Up.  In a must-win, the back and forth affair came to the bottom of the 7th, with the TinCaps defending an 8-7 lead.  With Oakville's tying run aboard, London sealed the game with a diving catch for the final out.  Great game by both teams.

Game 4:  The semifinal saw the TinCaps get out to a big early lead in the hot 4pm sun, and have to dig-deep to beat back a 6-run rally from the talented Riverside Royals, to hold on for a 15-14 win.

Game 5:  In the tournament final, it would Oakville again, the Wildcard qualifier.  Another back and forth affair became a 5-5 tie, going into the top of the 6th.  Oakville took advantage of a few plays we usually make, and added big bats to them, including two balls to the fence, to put 5 heavy runs on us in the 6th, which proved too much.

All told, players, coaches and parents should be very proud of taking 2nd place in a big tournament.  These kids are something special.  They performed well and handled themselves with grace.  When the big stage, premium opponents and a difficult game should have made us feel small,  we played BIG!!!   Make way for more Red and Green.
